We test out the new SRFACE 5/4 mm Hooded Wetsuit

On l’a tous remarqué ces dernières années, le prix des combinaisons est de plus en plus élevé. Il est justifié par des caractéristiques techniques et des technologies dont le nom est imprononçable, mais ça fait toujours mal au porte feuille de changer sa combinaison, quelqu’en soit l’épaisseur.
Si tu ne veux pas exploser ton budget t’es obligé d’attendre les soldes ou d’acheter le modèle aux couleurs flashy qu’aucune personne saine d’esprit ne voudrait porter. Matt Wilkinson est le seul à pouvoir s’en sortir dans ce domaine.
Pour répondre à ça, la marque néerlandaise SRFACE fabrique des combinaisons haut de gamme, au design sobre et élégant, et à un prix accessible. Fabriquées avec du néoprène à base de roche calcaire, leurs combis sont extrêmement souples et chaudes. Elles sont doublées à l’extérieur de panneaux Smoothskin pour vous protéger du vent, et à l’intérieur d’une doublure en peluche qui vous tiendra chaud et séchera rapidement entre deux sessions. Ils apportent beaucoup de soin aux détails, les coutures sont waterproof, collées à l’intérieur et scellées à l’extérieur.
J’ai eu la chance de tester cet hiver l’une de ces combinaisons.
J’ai commencé la saison en 4/3mm d’une marque concurrente en Bretagne et Normandie et j’ai souvent eu froid à cause du vent. Du coup j’ai choisi d’essayer l’ultime combinaison hivernale, la hooded 5/4mm de chez SRFACE. Étant donné le nombre d’aller/retour que l’on fait en Normandie pour surfer dans une eau à 8°C avec un vent à 50km/h, c’était sûrement le meilleur choix possible. Après tout, les fondateurs de la marque surfent en Mer du Nord avec ça, les mecs s’y connaissent en eau froide.

Le colis est arrivé sous deux jours et tout de suite j’ai été très agréablement surpris. Au lieu d’être emballée dans des tonnes de carton et plastique qui iront directement à la poubelle, la combinaison arrive dans un sac plastique épais qui se referme et vous servira donc par la suite de wetsuit bag. Évitez donc de l’éventrer à la reception.
De loin ça a juste l’air d’une combinaison, mais en l’enfilant j’ai compris où se fait la différence. La coupe est confortable et la taille était parfaite à tous les niveaux. Toutes les finitions sont très belles, le design est sobre et moderne avec juste de petits logos SRFACE oranges sur le néoprène noir.
En pratique, une fois dans l’eau froide de Normandie, cette combinaison était géniale. Elle est beaucoup plus souple que ce que j’imaginais, je pouvais bouger comme un ninja.J’étais incroyablement à l’aise malgré l’épaisseur que je n’avais pas l’habitude d’avoir sur le dos.
Chaque session durait au moins 2 bonnes heures et je n’ai jamais eu froid. Pour être honnête j’ai même eu trop chaud. Je transpirais dans ce truc! Je me suis offert le luxe de retirer la cagoule pour quelques canards, et l’eau n’est jamais rentré par le col.
Quand j’étais gosse, un mec m’a dit un jour « Si tu choisis bien ta combi tu ne sortiras jamais de l’eau parce que t’as froid, mais parce que t’as plus de force », et c’est exactement ce que cette combinaison peut vous offrir sans compromettre la performance.
Aujourd’hui nous sommes tous confinés et incapables de dire quand sera notre prochaine session. L’eau se réchauffe tout doucement et la cagoule est clairement devenue inutile pour les mois à venir. Toutes mes combinaisons sont désespérément sèches mais j’ai hâte de pouvoir renfiler cette combinaison l’hiver prochain, et quand nous serons à nouveau autorisés à voyager, j’espère pouvoir aller me faire un trip en eau froide avec cette hooded 5/4 SRFACE dans ma valise.
Maintenant il me reste à choisir si ça sera en Irlande, Écosse, ou Colombie Britannique.
We have all noticed in recent years that the price of suits is getting higher and higher. The price hike is justified by new technical features and technology whose names are unpronounceable. Either way it always hurts the wallet to change your suit, no matter how thick it is.
If you’re not looking to blow your budget your forced to wait for a sale or buy the flashy colorful model that no sane person would be caught dead in. Except maybe Matt Wilkinson, he’s the only one who can pull it off.
Answering this dilemma, the Dutch brand SRFACE manufactures top-of-the-range suits, with a sober and elegant design, and at an affordable price. Made from neoprene based on limestone rock, their suits are extremely soft and warm. They are lined on the outside with Smoothskin panels to protect you from the wind, and on the inside with a plush lining that will keep you warm with the benefit of drying quickly between sessions. They pay great attention to detail, the waterproof seams are glued on the inside and sealed on the outside.
I had the chance to test one of these suits this winter.
I started the season in 4/3mm from a competitor brand in the frigid waters of Brittany and Normandy and I was often cold because of the wind. So I chose to try the ultimate winter wetsuit, the 5/4mm hooded from SRFACE. Given the number of round trips we make to Normandy surfing in 8°C water with winds up to 50km/h, it was surely the best choice. After all the founders of the brand surf the North Sea, these guys know their way around cold water.

The package arrived within two days and immediately I was very pleasantly surprised. Instead of being packed in tons of cardboard and plastic that would head straight to the trash, the wetsuit arrived in a thick plastic, sealable bag which doubled as a wetsuit bag. Definitely avoid ripping it open at the reception desk.
It looks like any other wetsuit, but when I put it on I knew the difference. The fit is comfortable and the size is perfect on all levels. All the finishes are very nice, the design is clean and modern with just small orange SRFACE logos on the black neoprene.
In practice, once in the cold water of Normandy, this suit worked great. It is much more flexible than I imagined, I could move like a ninja.
I was incredibly comfortable despite the extra thickness I wasn’t used to having on my back.
Each session was at least 2 hours long and I never once felt cold. To be honest I was even too hot. I was sweating in that thing! I had the luxury of removing the hood for a few duck dives and the water never entered the suit.
When I was a kid, a guy once told me, « If you pick the right suit, you’ll never get out of the water because you’re cold, but because you’re exhausted, » and that’s exactly what this suit has to offer without compromising performance.
As of now we are all confined and unable to say for certain when our next session will be. The water is slowly warming and the hood has clearly become useless for the coming months. All my wetsuits are desperately dry but I’m looking forward to being able to put this suit back on next winter, and when we’re allowed to travel again, I hope to be able to go for a cold water trip with this 5/4 SRFACE hooded in my board bag.
Now all I have to do is choose if it will be in Ireland, Scotland, or British Columbia.
